where it all begins
The titanic task of reading this book took me many months; the reason was not precisely the extension of the same but the strange feeling that I got reading this thing. My purpose is not to write a resumé about the characteristic of Flights but to relate a chapter that stood in my mind foreverly.
This critic has no dignity to be the most voted opinion or commentary in Goodreads but at least I feel ok with myself if I finish the book writing these lineas. As Gaston Bachelard said, it is important to close the circle of the concept; in that order, if I start a book (I have told it to my friend Esteban) I want/need to finish it, even if I take me months.
But the selection of the obra is a fundamental point in all this. For example, in neither existence of myself in all the possibilities in this world (as long as I know myself), I could read a book of John Grisham, Stephen King, Isaac Asimov, H.P. Lovecraft or any bestseller that you could find in any bookstore.
Whatever. I am going to tell you the story of Erik. If you want to read the book you can find it by yourself.
Erik makes me remember of myself and a posible route of my life motivated by madness.
As the Joker said in Batman II: madness is easy, you just need to push a little bit more.
Erik was a solitary man. We meet himself at first drunk in a bar, fighting with everyone. People try to calm him down. We know so little about Eriks life, and I would not extend myself writing those details. We can argue that this character got a mental disease, something related with a difficulty to get into hard tasks and a personality with a tendency to isolation. He works moving a small ship, a ferry, from coast to coast. In the morning shift he starts the day smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. At 3 pm Erik is far away from his mind, but he is there, working.
Professor Chuaqui, in his masterclasses about mental health sociology, taught us that work is an essential part to help a person to gain his individuality, his self, in this society. Earning money he can access to the inputs that the environment offers them. Also, with their work they are playing an important role in the function of services of the world. Another important pilar is family because they give us emotional support.
We do not know anything about Erik´s family, but we can say that he is asiatic.
One day Erik started his shift as everyday, but he decided to do something different. So, the cars and the people were inside the ferry, and Erik conducted into the open ocean instead of the coast. He was lock down in this driver´s room. In a moment of fantasy he believed that people were congratulating him. It was not so.
The police interrupted the way of the ferry and stopped Erik. Olga knows this very well because she was inside the ferry that day.
